Designers revived a range of artisanal techniques this season, from crochet and feather fringing to intricate embroidery, and played with construction and fit in the form of puffed sleeves and oversized suiting.

While puffed sleeves appear regal, they also reflect the spirit of the 80s with their statement-making volume. From Louis Vuitton to Valentino, Chloe to Alexander McQueen, designers incorporated the construction of round and full balloon-like sleeves in tops, dresses and jackets for the SS19 collections.

Summer partywear is about frou-frou feather fringing, as seen from Loewe and Valentino. Bold and pastel colours reign supreme, with the playful detailing of feathers at the hems of skirts and dresses, and the cuffs and lapels of shirts, pulled off to maximum effect.

Loewe

Lace takes a more masculine form for summer, giving detail to androgynous suits and an edge to shirts and camis, seen from brands including Chanel, Dior, Victoria Beckham, Celine and Valentino.

Inject an element of folk into your summer wardrobe in the form of seventies-inspired crochet. Wear it draped over a bikini, as seen on the runways of Chloe and Dior, or layered over a top and trousers, presented by Victoria Beckham and Louis Vuitton.

FOR HIM

The cut of the double-breasted suit is oversized rather than form-fitting for summer, with strong looks on the runways of Emporio Armani, Dior and Paul Smith showcasing loose-fitting pairings in neutral tones, bright colours and sun-washed pastels.

Sheer shirts and tees created with light-as-a-feather tulle were shown on the SS19 runways of Dolce & Gabbana and Louis Vuitton.

Dior

Athletic apparel is chic for summer, with form-fitting padded jackets at Louis Vuitton, silk drawstring trousers paired with suit jackets at Kenzo, and geometric prints elevating athleisure at Hermes.

Embroidery emblazons summer knits, silk blazers and cotton jackets this season, with the artisanal handiwork shown off in bright neon colours at Valentino and Paul Smith.
