FALL FOR FASHION

The 8 biggest fashion trends for fall

VOGUE HONG KONG

DARK ROMANCE

Dark Romance was the dominant theme on the Fall 2019 runways, where designers gave motifs of unqualified femininity a sinister twist. Roses, lace and fuschia pink were tainted with gothic undertones at Alexander McQueen, while wilting flowers and lovelorn monsters took centerstage at Valentino.

FEATHERS

Feathers give an operatic extravagance this season, with flamboyant volume and texture. Marc Jacobs and Valentino closed their Fall 2019 shows with majestic evening gowns in graceful neutrals shades, while Saint Laurent and Loewe dialled up the drama with striking rainbow palettes and glow-in-the-dark effects.

LEATHER STAPLES

This season’s focus on leather can be seen from accessories to ready-to-wear clothing. Leading the mission is Bottega Veneta, whose biker-inspired Moto pants and quilted coats assert a new era of cool, whereas elsewhere, slim, tailored cuts — ranging from suits to mini skirts — give traditional silhouettes an edgy rework.

DISCO

Sequins, glitter and jewels galore, disco dressing is this season’s most spirited trend for the maximalists at heart. Look to Celine and Chanel for sparkling sweaters and suiting alternatives, or go full-on partywear with the dazzling dresses at Saint Laurent and Alexander McQueen.

OVERSIZED TRENCH COATS

The traditional trench is reimagined this season, presented as less preppy, more edgy. The recurring trend is for oversized proportions - drapey, voluminous shapes, belted at the waste for balance. The best are to be found in muted shades at Louis Vuitton and Valentino, while the look is full luxury with a cashmere iteration at Dior.

LEOPARD PRINT

From bright day-glo at Dior to shaggy coats and patterned tuxedos, leopard print aims to make an impact this fall. The pattern is bold so opt for detailing rather than a full look, with a nod to the trend in the form of a top, coat or bag.

DUFFLE COATS

Duffle coats are given the edge for fall, with oversized zips, pockets and toggles, and bold colour. The style takes an ultra-luxe, sophisticated stance at Berluti and Valentino, with slim, elegant cuts and chic all-black silhouettes.

VELVET

From the classic tuxedos at Dolce & Gabbana, to full-length coats, and the suits, shirts and ties at Ralph Lauren, velvet is best worn head-to-toe this season. If you’re not convinced, add an element of velvet to an outfit with one of the syrupy velvet bombers at Emporio Armani.
