Play it Forward: Power Play

2019年 05月 08日

The term power dressing conjures up images of sharp suits, sized-up shoulders, neck-tie blouses and no-nonsense stilettos, epitomised by actress Melanie Griffith in iconic ‘80s film Working Girl.

Evolving throughout time, the concept has been championed by designers playing with fashion to create statement looks. In the ‘30s, this was embodied by the tweed skirtsuits of Coco Chanel while, by the ‘80s, Armani had made accented shoulders a pop culture sensation seen on everyone from Princess Diana to Michael Jackson.

The power dressing of now is no less impactful. For spring/summer 2019, adrodgynous suits are given an injection of colour - the bolder, the better - with loose-fitting silk trousers and oversized blazers seen on the runways, while the structured skirtsuits of the 90s are making a comeback thanks to the likes of Gucci. Silhouettes are enhanced with protruding, pointed shoulders seen from Celine, and oversized cuffs and collars seen from Marc Jacobs, while headwear is strong in the form of studded and bold-coloured headbands by Prada, and tulle headpieces.

Whether you want to elevate your office attire with a colourful two-piece or add a touch of impact with a headpiece or statement collar, now is the time to do it.
