In an exclusive interview, pop culture’s newest star Bebe Rehxa talks about the secret of her success

This is the year when pop princess Bebe Rexha became queen. The 28-year-old has been writing songs for more than 10 years now and is finally receiving the recognition she deserves, including from fans in Hong Kong.

Rexha headlined the gala opening of LANDMARK’s boutique boulevard Alice’s World Of Pop on 13 October – a spectacular party that blends the worlds of pop, gourmet journeys and more than 100 in-boutique experiences – dazzling the audience with some of her best-known hits including Take Me Home, I Got You, and The Way I Are.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Rexha first tasted sucesss writing Like A Champion for Selena Gomez in 2010, then hit big with her 2013 Rihanna-Eminem song The Monster. With her breakthrough solo single, I Can’t Stop Drinking About You, she soon found herself recording with artists like Pitbull, G-Easy, Louis Tomlinson, Lil Wayne and Nicki Minjah.

This year, she’s been prolific and ubiquitous, releasing two EPs: All Your Fault Part 1 in February, and All Your Fault Part 2 in August. All Your Fault Part 3 will be out before the end of the year.

Cumulatively, Rexha has sold more than eight million singles, her Spotify streams exceed two billion, and YouTube views have topped 1.5 billion, leaving no doubt that after sitting on the edge of the pop mainstream for so long, this is her year to shine.

In our interview, Rexha talks about her passion for music, her fashion inspirations and the secret of her success.

You worked in the music industry for more than 10 years before achieving star status. Was it luck, karma, perseverance or self-confidence that brought you to the top?

Perseverance. There were so many times when it would have been easier to give up and others probably would have. But for me that was never an option.

You’re a self-described ‘pop disruptor’. What is it you aim to disrupt?

I don't ever want to do things the same way as anybody else. I don't ever want to be confined to a genre or any other bubble. And I want to be a champion for women songwriters standing up for themselves in a male dominated industry.

What has been the most thrilling moment in your career to date?

There are so many to choose from but hosting the MTV EMAs was an honour and a highlight. Also I Got You is now gold in the US, which I'm very proud of.

You recently launched your first fashion colloboration, an 11-piece bomber jacket line. Tell us about you personal style and beauty look.

I love to take risks with colour and texture when it comes to clothing. I'm not afraid to stand out and do something different. With makeup I often do a bold eye with a more neutral lip but I mix it up a lot.

When it comes to fashion, who are your idols?

J. Lo because she's flawless and she's the OG [original gangster] of risk taking.

Can you share some words of wisdom on the subject of success with your fans in Hong Kong.

Don't let anybody tell you that you can't. Tell them that you can and you will.
