FRAME OF MIND

JUL 10, 2019

Set your sights on precious sunglasses that stand the test of time.

From Audrey Hepburn’s iconic frames in Breakfast at Tiffany’s to Anna Wintour’s big black shades, sunglasses say a lot about your personal style. But these gorgeous summer accessories do more than make a sartorial statement – they could be veritable investment pieces too.

Investing in iconic sunglasses – especially those that have been previously owned by a celebrity – is one of the best ways to see sunglasses accrue value over time. In 2014, for instance, musical memorabilia auctioneer 991.com famously sold a pair of gold-rimmed frames once owned by John Lennon for roughly HK$9.5 million, while Steve McQueen’s blue-tinted Persol shades sold for US$70,200 (roughly HK$550,000) at Bonhams.

Aside from celebrity-owned sunnies, glamorous vintage pieces from the 1940s and 50s also tend to fetch higher price tags in re-sell markets, according to eyewear trader Cutler and Gross. For example, if you own a rare pair of limited-edition shades made with precious metals and stones from Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, Prada or Dior, they could be worth more in the future.

Whether you’re building a serious collection or simply curious about the world’s most precious sunglasses, here are a few of the most exclusive shades ever to enter the fashion world:
