MEET PRISCILLA ONO: MAKEUP ARTIST TO THE STARS

JUN 04, 2019

Priscilla Ono, Rihanna’s personal makeup artist and Fenty Beauty Global Makeup Artist, talks beauty trends and must-have products for both men and women.

California native Priscilla Ono arguably has the world’s best job. Not only is she Rihanna’s personal makeup artist, but she also represents beloved Fenty Beauty around the world. Celebrating self-expression and diversity, the brand recently made its Hong Kong debut at Harvey Nichols at LANDMARK, bringing with it an incredible array of foundations to suit every skin tone under the sun, not to mention no-smudge lipsticks and humidity-proof powders.

Ono explains why she thinks makeup can be a tool for empowerment, where she finds inspiration for Rihanna’s new looks, and how to keep your Fenty Glow looking fresh all day and night – even in Hong Kong’s humidity:

When did you first fall in love with makeup?
Priscilla Ono: I started using a lot of makeup in high school and have been in love with it ever since! Liquid eyeliner was one of the first products I owned, and I was actually so bad at applying it.

A few years later, I started working as a Sales Associate at Sephora and then became a Color Expert within a year, which is where I learned most of my foundational makeup skills. That job was so important in moulding my skills as an artist, because I worked with so many people with different skin tones, types, and features.

How did you come to work with Rihanna?
PO: The first time I met Rih was on set for a music video. But the first time I did her makeup was in the auditions to become a Fenty Beauty Global Makeup Artist.

Working with Rihanna is always exciting. There is no “typical” or “go-to makeup” look with her. She lets me be as creative as I want and is always pushing for something new and fresh. I feel I can let my true artistry shine when working with her – literally my dream client!

Over the years, have you developed your own 'style' of makeup artistry?
PO: I would describe my makeup artistry as unexpected and evolving. I am constantly inspired by different things I see, people I meet, new styles, trends, other makeup artists… I love playing with makeup, trying new techniques, learning and evolving my style. I don’t stick to a specific ‘formula’ with beauty – it’s so much fun to experiment and I love getting inspired by all the creativity around me to create new looks.

Makeup and fashion go hand-in-hand. I get inspired by fashion a lot, and when I work with a client, I have to know what they are wearing in order to complement the look perfectly.

Now available at Harvey Nichols, Fenty Beauty recently launched its first-ever eyebrow pencil: the Fenty Beauty Brow MVP.

What’s your favourite makeup trend this season?
PO: More brows! I expect brows to be huge – big, beautiful, feathery brows. I’m really excited about the new Fenty Beauty Brow MVP, which has an insane range of shades in this amazing creamy pencil formula. It has great colour payoff as well as longevity.

Which Fenty Beauty products could you never live without?
PO: One is Pro Filt’r Foundation – the colour range is amazing. I know I will always have my client’s perfect shade, and the texture is beautiful and creates the perfect soft matte natural base for a flawless complexion.

For my personal look, Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer is a product that I never leave my home without. I love to wear it on its own or on top of Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipstick.

I also can’t live without Match Stix Skinsticks. I can do a full-face using Match Stix alone – I use them for foundation, contour, blush, highlighter, and eye shadow. Match Stix Amber is a favourite shade for giving dimension to the face, and I love Yacht Lyfe for blush.

Try Match Stix, Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipstick, and Stunna Lip Paint to get the full Fenty Beauty effect.

Hong Kong is often rainy and humid. Any products that would be perfect for our climate?
PO: The key in rainy, humid weather is to wear a primer underneath your foundation. I recommend the Pro Filt’r Mattifying Primer if you’re worried about getting oily. The Soft Matte Longwear and Hydrating Pro Filt’r foundations are both sweatproof and humidity-resistant, so they’re perfect for humid weather!

After applying primer and foundation, I set the makeup with Instant Retouch Setting Powder and then use Invisimatte Blotting Powder in the oily T-Zone and under the eyes to remove excess shine. I recommend using Invisimatte throughout the day to touch up your makeup or Invisimatte Blotting Paper to absorb excess oil.

Any products that men will also appreciate?
PO: Fenty Beauty products are for everyone! A few easy staple products that I recommend for men are the Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Concealer for undereye and spot treatment, Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer to hydrate and nourish the lips, and Invisimatte Blotting Powder. Invisimatte is translucent, so it’s undetectable but helps eliminate shine, which is perfect for photos!

Any parting words on your personal philosophy?
PO: My personal makeup philosophy is that anyone can wear any style of makeup. It’s all about confidence, there are no rules!
