Iris Apfel – The Fashion Legacy

Born in New York at the beginning of the 1920s, Iris Apfel has had a rich and varied career. She studied history and art and early in her career, worked at Women’s Wear Daily, and collaborated with celebrated interior designers and illustrators. Later, she and her late husband, Carl, started their own textile and design company, Old World Weavers, and together they worked on many celebrated restoration projects, including several at the White House (for nine American presidents), as well as for star clients such as Estée Lauder and Greta Garbo.

But it wasn’t until Iris retired that she became really famous. In 2005, her eclectic style was recognized with an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York. She’s been celebrated with window montages at Bergdorf Goodman, and her life and style were documented in the much-loved documentary Iris by Alfred Maysles that showed her quick wit, creativity and spirit.

At the grand age of 95, Iris has been on countless “best dressed” lists, she has been the recipient of awards and the subject of books; she’s even been a visiting professor at the University of Texas. The originality of her beauty and the individuality of her theatrical style are recognised and celebrated across the generations. She is simply, a fashion star.

Wisdom of Individuality

Indefatigable, irrepressible, and entirely original, Iris Apfel is an advocate of fearless individuality. “More is more, and less is a bore,” - with that simple, pithy quote, she sums up her unique philosophy of life and fashion. “I’m experimental, I’m curious, and I try things. And if I like it, I do it again!” At 95, her appetite for life is as vital as ever. “If you’re going to sit there and do the same damn thing all the time, you might as well jump into the box yourself,” she says. Mixing glamour and fashion with humour and whimsy, Iris is feted for her idiosyncratic and original vision. As she so succinctly says: “I don’t like the norm.”
