Sir Sidney Nolan, OM, AC, RA

1917-1992

The Australian expressionist painter Sir Sidney Nolan was extraordinarily prolific, producing more than 10,000 significant works. He returned to favourite themes again and again - Australian landscapes and explorers, African, Antarctic and European landscapes, and Chinese and Australian-inspired abstractions.

Largely self taught, Sir Sidney had a passion for ideas, literature and art. He never relied on one style or technique, experimenting throughout his life both with figurative and abstract work. He explored many media including charcoal drawing, collage, printmaking and painting with enamel, acrylic and spray paint.

Sir Sidney travelled widely and responded to the spirit of each place he visited. He made the first of several trips to China in 1965. The eight paintings displayed in Exchange Square were painted in 1982 and purchased by Hongkong Land in 1984. They were inspired by a trip to Guilin, the Yangtze River and the Himalayas.
