Sir Sidney Nolan, OM, AC, RA

1917-1992

The Australian expressionist painter Sir Sidney Nolan was extraordinarily prolific, producing more than 10,000 significant works. He returned to favourite themes again and again - Australian landscapes and explorers, African, Antarctic and European landscapes, and Chinese and Australian-inspired abstractions.

Largely self taught, Sir Sidney had a passion for ideas, literature and art. He never relied on one style or technique, experimenting throughout his life both with figurative and abstract work. He explored many media including charcoal drawing, collage, printmaking and painting with enamel, acrylic and spray paint.

Landscape I and Landscape II were commissioned for Exchange Square by Hongkong Land. Because of their sizes, they were painted on the floor of the artist’s studio as the canvas was rolled out. The paintings were publicy unveiled by the artist himself.
